The Eco Committee met this week and came up with a pledge that they want pupils and staff to think about. It includes things like switching off lights when your not using them and eating your five a day portions of fruit and vegetables. Link for the pledge

Friday, March 12th. Glan Afan has been operating a successful 'Bullies Out' scheme for several years, so much so that an article appeared in the Neath Port Talbot partnership Community Spirit newspaper for Spring 2010 focusing on Glan Afan's achievements but underlining strategies and information concerning dealing with bullying. The article describes Glan Afan's pupil mentors and the very important role they play in school life in Glan Afan. To read the article, click here
Thursday, March 11th. The Year 9 'Options' Parents Evening took place from 6p.m. to 8p.m. A very good turn out of parents were given information about the option choices for Year 9 pupils and where their eventual GCSE certificates could take them. Representatives from NPT College and Careers Wales were also in attendance to provide valuable information. To see the Careers Wales Parents Evening information, click here
Thursday, March 12th. A group of fifty year 9 pupils visited Neath Port Talbot College for "taster" sessions. The pupils had an opportunity to experience the wide range of courses available, and in particular visit the Sports Academy where they were able to meet some of the Ospreys rugby players.
Fifty year 9 pupils went to Swansea University as part of an "ACE" day . The pupils had a tour of Swansea University and did some group work with student leaders from the University. They spoke to the students about higher education. Emma Mew said "I had a really good day and this has inspired me to go to University ," Tasnim said " I had a fun day and it gave me an opportunity to experience life in University."
Tuesday, March 9th. The Year 7 hockey team played their first 11 a side game on a full pitch against Cwmtawe Comprehensive School and as a result of an excellent performance by the side, won by 1 goal to nil. Kate Jones scored the winning goal. Well done to all in the team!!
Thursday, February 4th. A careers convention for our Year 9 pupils took place in the School Hall today. These pupils are in the process of choosing their options for GCSE, so the convention provided an opportunity for them to discuss various career options and relevant qualifications needed with professionals from all walks of life. Wednesday, March 3rd. A group of teachers from schools in Karachi, Pakistan where present in Glan Afan today as part of a schools exchange visit, funded by the British Council. The teachers spent the whole day touring the school and looking at lessons, and discussing the similarities and differences between education in Wales and Pakistan. Photographs here

Hannah Rowlands, Year 9 recently represented Afan Nedd Tawe Under 14 Netball team in the Inter Counties Tournament on the weekend. The team did exceptionally well and finished runners up in the tournament. Well done to Hannah and the Team!
March 1st . St .Davids day was celebrated in Glan Afan with a special assembly in the Hall for Year 7 and Year 8. The senior girls choir helped to make this a very special occasion with their splendid vocal contribution together with readings in Welsh and English. The Eisteddfod competition results were also read out. For photos click here

Dr Brian Gibbons, the AM of Aberavon, congratulated Glan Afan's school council for their recent work with the All Wales Convention. Thursday 11th February . Today one of Glan Afan's past pupils made a surprise visit to the school. He was greeted by excited pupils eagerly wanting his autograph and a photo with him!  Michael Sheen is now a worldwide famous actor, who recently featured in the teen favourite The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and is appearing as the White Rabbit in the upcoming Disney film Alice in Wonderland. Thursday, February 11th. The Year 8 parents evening will take place on at 4.00p.m. in the school hall. For any parents who cannot attend, please could they contact the school to arrange an interview regarding their child's performance.
Jack Thomas (Year 11) attended the Mark Jermin Stage School Awards on 30th January and he was awarded the Best Dressed Male award on the evening and will be appearing in Swansea Life Magazine shortly.
Wednesday, February 10th. A group of Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils visited Neath College's music department to view the facilities and have a taste of what they can offer in terms of further musical education. Friday 12th February. The school used a 'non - uniform day' to raise money for the Haiti Appeal. Pupils were asked to pay £1 to wear normal clothes, to help raise money for this very worthy cause, and the sum of £375.66p was raised! Well done to all who contributed.
The Glan Afan Silver Surfers have started this term with a grant of £1,486 from the National Lottery. The money has been spent on providing more opportunities for the group members to improve their IT skills and internet surfing experience. The group meets every Thursday from 3.35 to 4.55 in school, and the pupil mentors such as Thomas Evans, Owen Thomas, Hannah Mason, Luke Jenkins, Alex Hanford and Joseph Devries give up their own time to help out . Pupils in year 8 experienced the Techniquest mobile planetarium and star tour of the night sky. Students viewed a series of short clips before undertaking a team challenge to design the interior of a space station. Pupils were asked to consider the effects of living in space and solve a series of problems faced relating to the limited space and availability of food, water and air. Photographs here

This was a big week for sport in Glan Afan with lots of teams involved in action. On Tuesday February 2nd the year 7 hockey team beat Sandfields Comprehensive School by 5 goals to nil. Scorers for the school were Emilee Fisher, Bryony Moore (2), and Megan Baker - Rees. Also on Tuesday the Year 8 rugby team were involved in a really tight game against Cefn Saeson with only one try and conversion separating the sides.The Year 7 rugby team came up against stronger opposition from the Neath school and although never giving up, lost to a better side on the day. The Year 9 soccer team also played against Cefn Saeson in Cimla, proving to be too strong in the end, running out winners by 3 goals to 1.

Jade Fisher, Year 11 has completed a sculpture for the Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council Holocaust Memorial evening to be held in the Princess Royal Theatre on Tuesday evening, February 2nd. (NPTCBC webpage here).The sculpture represents a diary extract illustrating this years theme of a 'Legacy of Hope, which marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. On this day, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is challenging everyone across the UK to become part of a Legacy of Hope. (link here). Our responsibility is to remember those who were persecuted and murdered, and to have hope for a future without prejudice and to build a safer, stronger society. Wednesday, 22nd January. A group of Year 10 and Year 11 pupils visited Techniquest in Cardiff for a day of science investigation. The group, led by Mrs Beynon, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. To see photographs click here. To read Rebecca Charles report, click here

Olive Foley, a member of the Glan Afan Silver Surfer group, has scanned photographs of Port Talbot just before part of the town was demolished to make way for the M4 motorway. The scenes depicted show a very different town to the one known by our present pupils. On the 28.10.01 Glan Afan Comprehensive sent a crack team of six on an engineering challenge at Dyffryn Comprehensive School.  The team consisted of Abigail Rees (Team Leader), Hannah Raiotti (Communications specialist), Nathan Burbidge, Chloe Morgan(Science specialist) and Jacob Williams, Conor Williams(Maths Specialist).The theme for the day was ‘Urban Revolution’ and the task was to make something to move 1litre of water from one tray to another in 1 minute.  The team worked extremely well together and produced the best water pump of the day. The Glan Afan 'Silver Surfer' computer sessions for members of the school community have started once more. The weekly events takes place every Thursday from 3.30 to 4.45 and gives an opportunity for those who have never used a computer or the internet to experience it with the help and assistance of some of our pupils. The Year 9 netball team played Dyffryn at the Baglan Boys Club on Thursday, January 21st, and a very close game saw Glan Afan just lose out 12 - 11. On Friday, January 22nd the senior girls netball team played in a County tournament and again were unlucky to lose in the quarter finals to the eventual winners, Cwm Tawe.

Wednesday, January 20th. As part of the Year 10 Business Studies course, a website has been developed for the pupils by the pupils. 'Pupil Voice' was launched today and gives Glan Afan pupils an opportunity to voice their opinions about their school. The web address is www.pupilvoice.biz

Important information for parents

This Year, Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will remain on site during lunchtime. The canteen facility will be available with a selection of healthy eating options or a packed lunch can be brought into school. (Healthy Schools link)
